The Rooster in the Chinese zodiac

Symbolic interpretation

The Rooster is tenth in the cycle and pairs with the You hour at dusk. Because it announces the dawn, popular readings link it with punctuality, pride in appearance and plain speaking.

The Rooster takes tenth place and pairs with the earthly branch You (酉), the hours from 5 pm to 7 pm, when light fades and people head home. That is a little surprising for an animal famous for dawn, and a reminder that the zodiac works with symbolism, not logic.

The Han dynasty Lunheng by Wang Chong lists the chicken (雞, jī) as the animal for You, in the same debate that mentions the rabbit and the rat. In Chinese folk belief the rooster's crow is said to chase off night spirits, and rooster images appear on New Year prints as protectors of the household.

The word for chicken sounds close to the word for lucky or auspicious (吉, jí), so roosters turn up in good-luck wordplay. This is the kind of everyday cultural detail that makes the symbol feel friendly rather than abstract.

Modern popular readings describe Rooster people as organized, honest and proud of doing things well. Ask whether your standards are a gift to the people around you, or a weight.

Zodiac year dates

Years begin at Lunar New Year, not January 1. A birthday before the start date belongs to the previous animal year.

Dates follow the Chinese calendar in China. If your birthday falls within one day of Lunar New Year, check the boundary notice in your chart.
