Hua Lu, the transformation of prosperity

Traditional attribution or legend

Hua Lu (化祿) is the first of the four transformations, the one the classic text calls the spirit of good fortune. We read it as the place in a chart where things flow, attract and feel easy.

The four transformations (四化, si hua) are small tags that attach to four stars in a chart, chosen by the heavenly stem of your birth year. Each one changes how the star it touches behaves. Hua Lu (化祿) is the first, and its name is usually translated as transformation of prosperity or of salary.

The classic text calls it the spirit of blessing and fortune (福德之神). It says that when it sits in the Life or Career palace it supports advancement, and then adds a lovely detail: even when harsh stars gather around it, it stays fairly unharmed. The old writers treated it as a resilient kind of luck.

Our reading is more modest. Hua Lu is where things come easily, where people are drawn to you, where you are likely to enjoy yourself and to receive. The star it touches gets a warmer, more generous tone. It is not a promise of abundance, only a symbol of where openness and appeal are likely to show up.

A good question is where in your life you receive easily, and whether you let yourself enjoy it. Some people with a Hua Lu theme find that accepting good things is the hard part.
