Tian Liang, the Star of Shelter
Tian Liang is the Heavenly Beam, an earth star whose transformation the classic text calls shelter. It describes a generous, open-hearted person who looks after others. We read it as mentoring, principle and old-soul calm.
Tian Liang (天梁), the Heavenly Beam, is an earth star and the second of the Southern Dipper. The classic text names its transformation shelter or shade (蔭), the protection a big tree gives, and calls it the star of the parents' palace. The entry describes someone open-hearted, dignified and gentle in manner, and notes that the shelter it offers can extend to their descendants.
A beam holds up the roof, and that is the heart of the star: it supports other people. It is traditionally tied to seniors, mentors and guidance, and it is read as the star of the person who looks out for others, sometimes before they are asked. The old text also says it is decisive when the moment comes.
We read Tian Liang as an old soul: principled, calm in a crisis, quick to help and sometimes a bit lecturing. People bring their problems to the Tian Liang friend, which is flattering and a little tiring.
A caring question: who have you been sheltering, and who is sheltering you? A good beam also needs someone to hold up the beam.
