Tai Yin, the Moon Star

Traditional attribution or legend

Tai Yin is the moon star, the essence of water and the partner of the sun. The classic text links it with home and quiet refinement, and reads its strength by position. We read it as sensitivity and a rich inner life.

Tai Yin (太陰) is the Moon. The classic text calls it the essence of water and the partner of the sun, and ties it to the palace of home and property. It even notes the moon's phases, saying that the waxing half builds strength and the waning half lessens it. A person with Tai Yin is described as clever, refined and gentle in temperament.

Like Tai Yang, the moon star is read by position. A commentary says it does well in the night-time positions You, Xu, Hai, Zi and Chou, and is weaker in the daytime ones from Mao through Wei, which makes sense for a moon that shines best in the dark. The text also pairs it with the sun, a balance of light and quiet.

We connect Tai Yin with intuition, privacy, emotional intelligence and a love of home. We picture it as the star of the person who notices how everyone is feeling before anyone speaks. Its shadow side is withdrawal, or worrying in silence.

A quiet question: when do you need time alone to recharge, and do the people around you know that is what you are doing?
